10. LOUD PLACES

“And then Professor Marshall made it rain inside the classroom,” boasted Kendrick. He covered his head to amplify his story. His excitement drowned out the ambient chatter of the restaurant around them. “Not only did it put out the fire, but it soaked everyone! I was lucky enough to pull my hood up in time so that my hair didn’t get wet.”

“I thought it was refreshing,” chimed in Marco. He took a sip from his glass of water.

“I remember Professor Marshall’s first year elements class,” said Aura. She rubbed Kendrick’s arm. “If you think that’s impressive, just wait for his ice sculpting demonstration.”

“Sounds cool.” Marco, Jesse, and Aura all laughed at Kendrick’s pun. The other two at the table did not. “What do you think, Kase?” he asked politely.

Kase looked up from his plate and stopped playing with his peas. “I guess I feel sorry for the fire.” He shrugged. “I would have liked to watch it burn.” He glanced at Lenia, who smiled proudly.

Kendrick laughed. “The whole point of the exercise was to extinguish the fire. Water always conquers fire. That’s just how the elements work.”

“No, no, you’re right,” Kase said. He smiled back at Lenia. “Water always puts out fire. I don’t know of any time where fire would be able to withstand water. Can you imagine it? Sitting in a pool, glowing underneath its surface.”

Lenia giggled and put her hand over her mouth. “Nice sarcasm,” she whispered.

“Oh, Kase,” said Kendrick. “You’re lucky you’re a warrior. You wouldn’t make a good wizard at all.”

Kendrick, Marco, and Jesse laughed again, but Lenia glared at Kendrick.

“Kenny, don’t be rude,” Aura said kindly as she tapped his arm.

Kendrick looked at Aura and his smile disappeared. “I apologize, Kase,” he said. He looked back and met Kase’s gaze. “I didn’t mean for it to come out like that.”

“That’s okay,” Kase replied. “I know it’s my destiny to become a great warrior for the Triple Crown. I have a passion for being a warrior, and I understand that wizards have a passion for their craft, too. What type of wizard are you destined to be?” he asked, changing the subject.

“I love controlling the element of water.” Kendrick seemed to jump at the chance to talk about himself. “It makes me feel at peace to have my emotions move around like waves, dancing with the liquid as the magic moves through my body. It connects me to the world … well, more than the other elements, at least. I know you don’t understand, but elemental control as a wizard is so liberating.”

“He’s right,” whispered Lenia with a smile. “Water is the best element to control.”

“Nice sarcasm,” Kase whispered back.

“I know I’m destined to be a firefighter,” continued Kendrick, seemingly unaware of Kase and Lenia’s quiet conversation. “Being able to ride into an emergency, saving people from the destruction of fire is something I’ve dreamed of since I was young. I really just want to help people.”

He grabbed Aura’s hand. “In fact, Aura and I are going to make quite the team of emergency responders.
